The single most powerful thing we posses as a human being is our mindset. The manner in which we choose to think and react to things directly shapes our lives. Most don’t understand this concept, we say we do, but we don’t really. Its one of the aspects we have the most direct control over and should be our most valuable asset. A strong mindset creates a significant advantage in business, relationships, as well as many other aspects of life. For example, when we are able to remain composed in a truly trying situation, we are allowing our self a strong opportunity to handle it accordingly. In other words, we are giving our self the upper hand because the moment we react this way, we take control of the situation. This is a critical component of becoming successful because once we have the right mindset, its up to us to do the rest. The ball is now in our court. Having confidence can play a role in having a naturally strong mentality, but once we gain the mindset confidence will come naturally. Our mind is like a muscle, the more we train it, the stronger it will get. I’m going to share some strategies that have helped me.
Think of the Situation 10 Years From Now (Perspective)
Take a second to think about it. Is this one scenario really as serious as it seems right now? Imagine yourself out at a bar with a beautiful girl you really like. Everything is going great, you’ve been having some beers and you get up to go to the bathroom. Next thing you see her across the venue talking to another guy. How do you react? If you’re like most people, you will probably feel upset. But the moment we have this feeling we have to recognize it. We have to ask ourselves, will I see myself out with this girl 10 years from now? If the answer is no, just chill and play it cool. Maybe go over and say hello because no matter how angry you may actually be inside, its not worth losing your cool. And you may still get laid. If the answer is yes, you need to reconsider the type of chicks you date. This is a great example because its a situation where most people will over react from emotion, before giving themselves a chance to logically consider the situation. Also a true story. But this is the way an untrained mind reacts, without control. By taking a second to put the situation at hand into a much larger scope of 10 years from now, it will help us gain perspective, and more ultimately control of any situation. Leading us to (step 2)…
Remember Experience is the Best Teacher
Chances are if you’re reading this, you’ve liked my first technique. So this one is like step two. As people we are constantly learning. No one gets everything right the first time around. Or even the second or third. We learn through constant repetition. For those of you who don’t know, Mike Tyson, former youngest two time heavy weight champion of the world, wrote an autobiography. In his autobiography “Undisputed Truth”, he said something along the lines of it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill but a lifetime to fully understand it. Tyson had mastered his skillset way before he could even start to understand it. In other words, as soon as we take control of the situation, we must recognize that it is worthless until we master how to play it. This is where experience comes into play. Tyson was unique because he had to learn everything backwards. Because he had seen so much success so early on, he believe he could never go wrong. Why would he change what he was doing? He didn’t need to keep learning, everything was already working out. When the reality was the only experience he had attained was inside the boxing ring. Because he kept this mindset outside of it, he struggled to learn and grow in many other areas. It wasn’t until later on that he began to recognize the value of experience, both good and bad. You should read the book, really good. Mike taught me that once we understand and accept that even bad experiences are valuable, our mindset becomes stronger. If you remember this, you can never go wrong. Think of Mike Tyson as an example.
I wanted to post another one but I’m super tired and have to wake up at 6 AM for work tomorrow. I hope you enjoyed my post.
